Apprenticeships & Traineeships

About the Program

The Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeships Program has been designed to provide a pathway for students to pursue an Apprenticeship or Traineeship, rather than a university qualification after graduating from Secondary School. This program allows students to gain valuable work experience in their industry of choice, aiming to secure them an Apprenticeship or Traineeship whilst still at College. Students can choose from over 600 Queensland Apprenticeships and Traineeships, and receive a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) upon graduating from College.

POE Apprenticeships is a unique and specialised program of excellence. Unlike many other School-based Apprenticeship (SbA) and School-based Traineeship (SbT) programs, which operate on one day a week of work experience, the POE Apprenticeships Program is structured to give students significant blocks of time in the workplace. This allows students to have much more in-depth and realistic industry experiences. The program works on a four-week per term out on work placement basis. During this period, they are actively seeking work experience with prospective employers. During their time at the College, students engage in intensive learning, studying the following core subjects: Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Industrial Technology Skills (ITS) and Business Studies. They also complete two Cert ll courses over the two year period. One year it will be Hospitality based and the alternate year it will be Community Services based. Both these certificates are part of the college program, allowing students to use their VETiS funding to complete an additional certificate of their choice.

The aim for students doing work experience is to learn skills and gain experiences that will help them decide on their career choice. The ultimate goal for students is to obtain a School-based Apprenticeship or a School-based Traineeship, which they will complete during work experience rotation blocks. On successful completion of the two-year course, students will earn a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). When students complete their Apprenticeship or Traineeship, they will qualify for an ATAR ranking and will still be able to enter university to further their chosen field, if desired.
