As Christmas approaches, I find myself caught up in the excitement of anticipation. The lights strung along rooftops, the familiar sound of carols filling the air, and the warmth of shared traditions all remind me of the joy we feel when waiting for something special. It’s a time of eager expectation that brings beauty to a season of waiting.
I think of a musician playing their instrument, carefully building the crescendo of a song. Each note is deliberate, leading to that moment of power and beauty where everything comes together. Or a gardener planting seeds in the spring, tenderly nurturing the soil and watering in hope, patiently awaiting the moment when the garden bursts into bloom. Even a child eagerly counting down the days to their birthday feels the thrill of waiting, knowing something wonderful is just around the corner.
One of my favourite events on our College calendar is our Pre-Prep Nativity Play. Not only because of the story it tells but because of the anticipation it builds in my heart as we draw closer to Christmas. The excitement, energy, and joy of our Pre-Prep children is contagious as they reenact the story of Jesus’ birth. This year, their performance was even more special as they hosted a community outreach to BlueCare Coopers Plains Home and Community Care. Seeing our youngest children bring smiles to the faces of their audience as they shared the message of Christ’s birth was a beautiful reminder of the power of God’s love.
The anticipation we feel in the lead-up to Christmas reflects a deeper spiritual truth. It mirrors the centuries of longing for the Messiah, fulfilled on that first Christmas night when Jesus came to earth. The prophet Isaiah beautifully captured this hope: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6, KJV). God’s people waited with hope, and when Jesus finally arrived, it was a moment of celebration and joy that changed history forever.
Advent, the season leading up to Christmas, invites us to embrace that anticipation, not just for the festivities but for the deeper reality of God’s promises. It reminds us that just as a song builds, a garden blooms, or a birthday arrives, we too are waiting with joy and hope for Jesus to come again and make all things new.
So, as we count down the days to Christmas, let’s take time to savor the waiting and the beauty that can so often be found in it. Let’s allow the moments of expectation to draw us closer to God, reflecting on His faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. In the waiting, we find not only joy but the opportunity to trust and worship the One who is truly worth waiting for.
