We all enjoy being recognised; perhaps when we re-enter the coffee shop and the server has remembered our name. We think, ‘Wow, I am not just another number. They know my name’. Yet that is nothing compared with going home to people who know love and care for us. It constantly amazes me that God knows us all by name, not in some database way but that He knows us, He knows our fears, hopes, dreams and He cares.
Psalm 139:1-2 and 5 (NLT) O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away…You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
We have been designed with a need for relationship with each other and with God. Jesus came to demonstrate God’s personal love for each of us. His ministry on earth was marked by personal interactions, bringing hope and healing. The cross says to each of us, ‘I care’.
Romans 5:8 (NLT) But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
At Brisbane Christian College, it is our desire that God’s love not be simply announced, but that it be demonstrated. We all respond better to a demonstration of love than an explanation. I have the wonderful privilege of sharing devotions with our teachers from time to time. I am always inspired by the wonderful stories of students encountering Jesus, or excelling in sport or other endeavours. What is so evident is the care that these teachers have.
I remember being taken to a classroom by one of our Primary staff so that she could show off the Easter craft made by her class of children. I was inspired by this. I was inspired to stop more, to chat longer and to enjoy the moment.
Today, let’s make it our goal to remember a new name and to learn something new about those we do life with.
We do better together.
